This week, our team officially launched the first phase of our livestock pass-on scheme in Chiwamba EPA, Lilongwe, delivering 40 resilient, locally selected rabbits to Mlela Club and Tiyambe Club in T/A Chimutu—marking the first milestone in our target to distribute 200 rabbits across the area.
This initial roll-out reaches 20 households, equipping each with a pair (2 rabbits) to kickstart their home breeding setups.
We were honoured to have the handover event graced by the AEDC for the EPA, along with our respected local traditional leaders. Their presence and leadership highlight the deep community ownership and institutional support anchoring this initiative from day one.
These 40 rabbits represent the foundation of a self-multiplying asset. With rapid breeding cycles and low space requirements, they provide members with a dual engine for growth in terms of rich organic fertilizer for backyard soil health and a quick-liquidation financial cushion for emergency household cash needs. Under the guidance of our local leaders and trained Community Based Volunteers (CBVs), member households will manage these units and pass on the first wave of offspring to neighbouring members.
When targeted livestock distribution is backed by strong club structures, government support, and traditional leadership, 40 rabbits aren’t just farm animals. They are the start of an expanding engine for community nutrition, financial independence, and climate resilience.
